The history of Amsterdam starts from the 12th century when it was just a village famed for fishing. In the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam became one of the major trading centers in the world and one of the richest cities, and thus capitalism was born. It was also a prime position for shipping goods. The status of Amsterdam has deteriorated during the 18th and 19th centuries as a result of wars of the Dutch Republic with England and France, especially the Napoleonic wars which led to the complete inclination of Amsterdam. However, Amsterdam managed to rise again and gained its previous prosperity at the end of the 19th century. Several new landmarks were constructed, including museums, railway stations and more; the marvelous city of Amsterdam has succeeded in expanding all over the year till the present time.

Amsterdam contains several fascinating attractions that encourage various tourists to visit the city and witness its beauty. You can take a look at the Van Gogh Museum which is a famous art museum established as a dedication to the stunning art pieces of Vincent van Gogh. It lies at the Museum Square along with other museums like the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and more. The Van Gogh Museum was inaugurated around the year 1973 AD and designed by the Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld and the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. It exhibits a large collection of creative paintings and drawings by Van Gogh, and thus it has become one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands. There is also the Oude Kerk or the Old Church which is one of the ancient parish churches. It was built in the year 1213 AD approximately but the building was replaced later around the year 1306 AD.
